SHAWNEE, Okla. (BP)--Oklahoma Baptist University senior Rachel Stark was named NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Year on Tuesday, March 20, the highest honor ever given to a Lady Bison basketball player.

Stark, a 6-0 forward from Leawood, Kan., led the NAIA in scoring at 22.6 points per game and became one of the first players ever to record 1,000 points at two NAIA schools.

Stark, who is also a first-team All-American, set the single season scoring record at OBU this year, capping the season with 780 points.

"I think this is just a tremendous accomplishment for her," said Lady Bison coach John McCullough. "It just says what a great player she is.

The great things she is able to to do just sets her apart from a lot of players. I'm very proud of her. This is a great award for her and her
teammates and for OBU."

"I'm stunned," said Stark after learning the news Tuesday. "This is a big honor. It was just great to be able to play an entire season. I'm thankful for that. You have to have good teammates to get something like this. I wan to acknowledge their part in this."

OBU's Casi Cox, who averaged 14.8 points per game, was an All-American honorable mention. Stark and LeAnn Bailey were named to the All-America Scholar Athlete team as well.

This season, Stark also shot 40.2 percent from three-point range, hitting 72 of 179 three-point attempts. She also was among the NAIA leaders in free throw percentage, hitting 86.7 percent from the free throw line (170-196), breaking Carrie Moss' 1998 school record of 86.2 percent. She also averaged 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists and had a team-high 95 steals.

She also broke Dayna Shultz's single-season record with 269 field goals and Andy Holubova's career scoring average record with a 22.47 points
per game. Stark finished her career with 2,180 points. She had 1,169 points at Lipscomb University and 1,011 at OBU, crossing the 1,000 point mark for the Lady Bison in the 2001 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Championships in Jackson, Tenn.

Stark, the 2001 Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year, scored 231 points in the 1999-2000 season before missing the second half of the season with a knee injury. She was a 1998-99 First Team NAIA and Kodak All-American and is now a two-time NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete.

Stark hopes to play on, either in the WNBA or overseas and will begin exploring her professional options.

"I haven't heard of any WNBA interest, but I definitely want to continue playing," said Stark. "We'll just have to see if anything opens up."
