Demon Deacons lose heartbreaker to Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (BP)--Wake Forest volleyball lost a tough five-game match to Duke Tuesday night in Durham. The Demon Deacons were riding a four-game winning streak coming into the match and looking to upset the then 12-2 Blue Devils.

With the loss Wake falls to 10-6 overall, 4-3 in the ACC while Duke improves to 13-2 overall and 5-2 in the ACC.

Despite the fact the Deacons boast leaders in all ACC statistical categories, they couldn’t close the match for a win tonight. Wake lost with a score of 32-34, 30-24, 30-25, 23-30 and 9-15, its third loss in the ACC. Senior Trina Maso de Moya posted 19 kills, 18 digs, two service aces and two block assists. Senior Margaret Davidson registered 15 kills and a .355 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Ashley Fisher contributed 11 kills and 13 digs, sophomore Jessica Hauff recorded 12 kills and 12 digs and sophomore Sara Beth DeLisle tallied a season high 17 kills and 11 digs of her own. Junior setter Ashlee Phillips led the Deacon offense with 64 assists, her third highest mark of the season.

Head coach Valorie Baker was disappointed with the loss.

“We came in paired up very well,” said Baker. “Our team could have beaten them. The matched was played at an even pace. If our girls stepped up a notch physically, we could have won. We played with them, instead of one notch above them.

“Duke senior outside hitter Dorrette Burwell hit .419 for the night. She was a key contributor for the Blue Devils, finding our holes and hitting to them.”

Wake Forest completes its brief road trip on Sunday Oct. 14, when the Deacons face Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. at 1 p.m.
