Monceaux signs with Liberty
Friday, May 3, 2002
By Todd Wetmore

LYNCHBURG, Va. (BP)--Liberty University Head Men's Basketball Coach Randy Dunton has announced the signing of Jeremy Monceaux, a 6-2, 185 lbs. point/shooting guard, from Odenville, Ala., to a national letter of intent for the 2002-2003 academic year.

"Jeremy Monceaux represents all that we are looking for in a student-athlete," comments Dunton. "His parents -- Dave and Kimberly -- have nurtured his development with a wealth of national basketball experiences within a genuine spiritual perspective."

"Jeremy may well be the most experienced basketball player from a national standpoint to ever sign with the Liberty University men's basketball program," adds Dunton. "Playing for his father at the 1A level, Jeremy was able to dominate most opponents. Both of us recognize that the level of play will be much like his national AAU competition where he averaged 14.0 points per game and 6.0 assists per contest."

Monceaux is a three-time Alabama State Player of the Year from Parkway Christian Academy in Birmingham, Ala., and finished this past year as the all-time leading scorer in the state of Alabama with 4,555 career points scored, averaging 36.0 points per game during his prep career.

"Jeremy had many quality opportunities with high profile program, but at Liberty University we found a program with common philosophy," said Dave Monceaux, Monceaux's father and head coach at Parkway Christian. "It is time for Jeremy to play for someone other than myself and I believe Coach Dunton's disciplined approach will bring out his very best. Coach Dunton's level of commitment to excellence and Jeremy's personality is the big reason Liberty University is where he needs to be."

The combination guard was named the 2002 Birmingham Metro Player of the Year and was honored as a USA Today High School All-American, as well as a finalist for the McDonald's All-American squad.

"I chose Liberty University because I really believe in Coach Dunton's vision for the basketball program," said Monceaux. "After my visit, I realized what the combination of academics and spiritual emphasis will do for my life. I want to play a role in helping the Liberty University men's program get back to the NCAA Tournament."
