Union basketball signs Haitian for 2002-03 season
Thursday, Aug 8, 2002
By Steven Aldridge

JACKSON, Tenn. (BP)--Union University has signed Pierre Valmera, a 6’8” forward, to play basketball for the Bulldogs this fall.

Valmera, from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, hails from the same place as Robert Joseph, who spent last season shattering block records and gaining national recognition during his season with the Bulldogs. NAIA Player of the Year, All-American and all-time college record holder for blocks, Joseph, has signed a pro contract with Coinga Menorca, a team in Spain.

Valmera will join the Bulldogs as a freshman. He averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks per game last season. Valmera was a member of the Haitian Nation Team and graduated from Nicholas Copernic High School in Haiti.

“It is a thrill to have a freshman of Pierry’s magnitude. His presence will be known on both offense and defense,” said head coach Ralph Turner. “It’s a lot of fun to coach a guy that loves the game of basketball and has the desire to put in extra time in the gym to make himself a better player. We have that in Pierry”.
