Pollio named commissioner of Mid-South Conference
Thursday, Aug 15, 2002
By Holly Ratliff

COLUMBIA, Ky. (BP)--The Mid-South Conference will begin its eighth season with the hiring of its second commissioner as Mike Pollio has accepted the league's leadership.

Pollio brings extensive coaching and administrative experience to the Mid-South Conference, having been head basketball coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Virginia Commonwealth University and Eastern Kentucky University. He was director of athletics at Kentucky Wesleyan from 1980-85 and was associate athletic director at the University of Louisville from 1992 until July 2001.

"I graduated from a small school and have been both a coach and athletic director at one as well, so I have great admiration for the mission and purpose of each school in the Mid-South Conference," Pollio said. "I am both proud and honored to have been chosen as their representative."

The Mid-South Conference, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, consists of six full-time institutions: Campbellsville University, Cumberland (Ky.) College, Georgetown College, Lambuth University, Lindsey Wilson College and Pikeville College. It also has four associate members, which participate in football: Belhaven (Miss.) College, Cumberland (Tenn.) University, Union College and the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The Mid-South Conference wholly embraces the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative which creates an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Upon its inception, every coach and official working in the MSC endorsed the Champions of Character.

"We had a number of outstanding candidates for our commissioner's position, and we're pleased to have Mike on board," said Lindsey Wilson President William Luckey, outgoing chair of the President's Council. "The Mid-South Conference will always owe a debt of gratitude to Tom Dowling, who led us to become one of the premier leagues in the NAIA. In recent years, the MSC has won national championships in men's basketball, football and men's soccer, and we look forward to continuing these achievements."

"We're very excited about naming Mike Pollio as our new commissioner," said Hal Smith, president at Pikeville College who will now chair the President's Council. "Mike understands the value of intercollegiate athletics in the smaller college and our emphasis upon the development of the 'whole' person."

Pollio will officially begin his term August 19 with an office in Louisville.
