CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (BP)--In a complete game victory with the offense, defense and special teams all doing their part Campbellsville University secured a 31-17 Parent’s Day win over Cumberland University.

The win gives Campbellsville an outside shot at a possible tie for a Mid-South Conference title and also keeps the talented Fighting Tigers in the hunt for an NAIA playoff appearance. Campbellsville improves to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the MSC while the Bulldogs of Cumberland drop to 4-4 and 4-2.

Cumberland got on top 7-0 on their first possession of the game with fullback Brent Dalton carrying the ball on every play but one as the Bulldogs marched 66 yards in six plays for the score. Dalton capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run through the middle. Kicker Matt Hutto successfully converted the point after attempt. Campbellsville answered on the ensuing possession with their own 66-yard drive following a 29-yard kickoff return by Ricky Gehres. Gehres closed the drive when he caught a J.C. Savasuk pass in the corner of the end zone from one yard out. Donnie Johnson converted the point after for the Fighting Tigers.

Campbellsville moved ahead at 10-7 late in the first quarter on a Johnson 39-yard field goal. The field goal followed a three-play drive that stalled on the Bulldog 31-yard line. A 22-yard punt return by J.P. Montgomery set up the field possession that made the field goal possible. Cumberland regained the lead on their next possession with wing back Juan Champion capping a 72-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

With Cumberland holding the 14-10 lead through the half the Fighting Tigers opened the second half by marching 83 yards in 11 plays to retake the lead at 17-14 when Derek Shelton blasted off tackle for a one yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs had an opportunity to pull even, but when Campbellsville’s defense stiffened and forced a field goal attempt, William Mulder blocked the 46-yard try by Cumberland’s Hutto.

Hutto failed again when he missed short and to the left on a 49-yard try on Cumberland’s next possession. Campbellsville answered with an 11-play drive that netted 67 yards and a nine-yard touchdown run up the middle by Brian Rowland. The score and point after by Johnson made it Campbellsville 24, Cumberland 10.

With 2:48 left in the ball game Cumberland marched into Tiger territory, but when a third and eight pass by quarterback John Snyder to Jaun Champion fell incomplete Hutto was brought in for the third time in the final quarter. This time he converted a 28-yard field goal with 1:28 on the clock, giving the Bulldogs a chance if they could pull off a successful onside kick.

Hutto’s onside kick was fielded cleanly by Campbellsville’s Ryan Flynn, who returned it 55 yards to the Bulldog one-yard line. Shelton scored his second touchdown of the game on the very next play to seal the victory at 31-17.

Statistically, Shelton led Campbellsville in rushing with 96 yards and the two scores on 13 carries. Savasuk looked up to his early season form with an 18 for 27 day passing that netted 185 yards and one touchdown. Gehres tied the Campbellsville record for receptions in a game with 10 catches for 130 yards including the first quarter touchdown. Mulder led the Fighting Tigers defensively with 14 total tackles including nine solos. Linebackers Matt Quinn and Josh Schindler added 13 and 12 stops respectively.

Campbellsville will travel to Georgetown, Ky., Nov. 2 to take on two-time defending NAIA national champions Georgetown College.
