By David Sherwood

WINGATE, N.C. (BP)--Wingate University junior guard Titus Miller hit two free throws with 7.5 seconds remaining, lifting the Bulldogs to an 81-80 South Atlantic Conference men's basketball win over Presbyterian College Feb. 12.

Wingate (14-8 overall, 7-2 SAC) remain tied for first place with Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne atop the league standings. Presbyterian (20-5 overall, 6-3 SAC) falls one game back.

The Bulldogs led by 10 in the first half before settling for a 36-30 lead at intermission. An 11-3 Presbyterian run gave the visitors a 57-56 lead on a lay-up by freshman forward Michael Drum with 9:35 remaining in the contest. The advantage was the first for the visitors since midway through the first half.

A three-point field goal by Presbyterian senior guard Andrew Dellinger stretched the lead to 64-58 with 6:59 to go. A 10-4 Bulldog run tied the game at 68 on a jumper by senior guard Djuan Hankins.

The two teams swapped leads and ties down the stretch. A long jumper by Wingate sophomore guard Steven Mims put the Bulldogs up 74-72 with 2:40 to play. Presbyterian wrapped three-pointers by senior forward Jeff Whittle and freshman guard Tray Ballenger around a Drum lay-up to take a 80-77 lead with 55 seconds left.

Wingate senior center Kristian Jensen hit two free throws with 45 seconds remaining to cut the Presbyterian lead to one (80-79). Presbyterian took the air out of the ball, missing a lay-up as the shot clock ran down.

Miller got the rebound and was fouled. He made both charity tosses to give Wingate its final margin. Presbyterian missed a jumper with two seconds left and Miller again grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Hankins and Miller had 21 points each for Wingate. Drum led Presbyterian with a game-high 22 points. Ballenger netted a career-high 21 points, including five-of-seven three-point field goals. Presbyterian senior guard Chuck Rayford narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and a career-high tying nine assists.
