MARSHALL, Texas (BP)--East Texas Baptist kept its American Southwest Conference playoff hopes alive April 5 by sweeping a pair of games from ASC East rival University of the Ozarks and completing a three-game weekend sweep of the Eagles at Young Field.

ETBU got a pair of complete-game pitching performances to lead Saturday’s doubleheader sweep, with sophomore Brandon Vorse tossing a six-hitter in a 5-2 win in game one of twinbill followed by an Aaron Lippe seven-hitter in a 9-3 win in the final game.

The wins lift the Tigers to 20-8 on the season and 11-7 in conference play. Ozarks falls to 10-16 and 5-13. ETBU entered the weekend trailing second-place University of Texas-Dallas by two games in the race for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

The Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit in game one Saturday with a three-run uprising in the third inning, keyed by an RBI single by Tommy Edwards and a two-run triple by Nathaniel Jordan. ETBU increased the lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a solo home run by Matt Hamilton and gave Vorse (4-1) insurance in the fifth inning on a double by Edwards, who eventually scored on a passed ball.

The double was Edwards’ 20th of the season, which sets a new Tiger single-season record. The old mark was 19, set by Bink Grimes in 1995.

Edwards had three hits on the day to lead ETBU at the plate.

ETBU took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game two, keyed by a two-run single by Trey Luster, who finished with three hits. After Ozarks climbed to within 3-2, ETBU got some breathing room on an RBI single by Jeremy Collins followed by Collins’ run scored on a wild pitch. ETBU then put the game away in the fifth with a run on James Morgan’s RBI double and three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Edwards and a two-run double by Jordan.
