MARSHALL, Texas (BP)--For the second straight season, the East Texas Baptist softball team has been sent packing to the Pacific Northwest to compete in the NCAA West Regional at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.

ETBU learned its destination May 5, two days after clinching its fourth straight American Southwest Conference championship and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

PLU (30-1), ranked No. 1 in the nation, hosts the tournament for the second straight year. The Lutes and Lady Tigers are the only teams to pull off a repeat visit to the West Regional this season. PLU won the regional last season with a 3-1 win over ETBU in the championship game.

PLU will be seeded No. 1, with ETBU, ranked No. 15 nationally, seeded No. 3. Central Iowa (32-4-1) is seeded second, with No. 4 seed Cal-Lutheran
(22-15) and No. 5 seed Chapman (29-8).

ETBU will face Central Iowa, the Iowa Intercollegiate Conference champion, at 2 p.m. Central May 9 in a first-round match-up of the No. 8 and No. 15 teams in the national poll.

PLU won the Northwest Conference for the 16th time in 17 seasons. Cal-Lutheran, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., was the SCIAC champion, and Chapman, an independent, received an at-large bid.

The NCAA field consists of 43 teams, spread through eight different regionals. The eight winners of the regionals will meet next week in Salem, Va., at the NCAA Softball World Series.

All ETBU games in Tacoma will be broadcast live over the Internet at www.tsrnsports.com, as a production of Chitwood Sports Media.
