BUIES CREEK, N.C. (BP)--Campbell University student-athletes exceeded departmental academic goals in all phases during the 2002-03 year.

Not only did Fighting Camel athletes earn Academic All-America and all-district honors, but the department compiled a cumulative 2.77 grade-point average, exceeding the goal of 2.75. Thirty-five percent -- or 91 of Campbell's 262 athletes -- earned a 3.0 grade-point average for the 2002-03 campaign. Each team compiled a cumulative GPA in excess of 2.25, topped by the women's (3.63) and men's (3.25) tennis programs.

During the 2002-03 academic year, Campbell athletes were recognized on the Atlantic Sun Conference all-academic teams a total of 94 times for posting a 3.0 grade-point average during their semester of competition.

Coach David Johnson's women's tennis team not only earned a national ranking during the regular season and the top seeding in the Atlantic Sun Championship, but also compiled the department's top team GPA to earn the department's Academic Excellence banner.

Each of the eight members of the women's tennis team -- Isabel Declercq, Colen Gore, Lindsey Hughes, Carmen Linder, Mila Pinto, Ingrid Stockinger, Kerstin Stockinger and Pascale Veraverbeke -- all compiled a GPA of better than 3.0 for the 2002-03 academic year, the only Fighting Camel squad to have a 100 percent success rate in the category.

Both the volleyball and men's tennis teams had seven of their nine athletes (78 percent) achieve a 3.0 for the entire year, while 67 percent of the women's cross country team also achieved the standard.

Campbell athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA 32 times during either the fall or spring semester. Nine student-athletes gained a 4.0 GPA for the entire 2002-03 academic year.

Crystal Brim (volleyball), Jennifer Feltis (women's soccer), Shea Geyer (men's soccer), Lindsey Hughes (women's tennis), Cari Jones (cheerleading), Matt Kleweno (baseball), Brad McKeiver (men's basketball), John Ottinger (wrestling) and Emily Wahlquist (women's track & field) all made straight-A's during the entire academic year.

Individually, Brim was named the Atlantic Sun Female Student-Athlete of the Year after graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Spanish major. The Elkhart, Ind., product earned third-team VerizonŽ Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Brim and McKeiver were selected to VerizonŽ Academic All-District first teams for their respective sports, while women's soccer standout Sara Davis of Jacksonville, N.C., gained second-team Academic All-District notice for the second-consecutive year.

McKeiver, a Richmond, Va., native who owns a 3.97 GPA and has made a 4.0 in five of his first six semesters as a trust management major, was named to the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar Athlete Team.
