Ouachita names new head baseball coach
Friday, May 21, 2004
By Chris Babb

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (BP)--Ouachita Baptist University Director of Athletics David Sharp has announced that Scott Norwood, originally of Tulsa, Okla., has been hired as the school's new head baseball coach.

Norwood comes to Ouachita from Sterling College in Sterling, Kan., where he was the skipper for the NAIA school for three seasons in which he compiled an overall record of 105-45. Norwood led the Warriors to three consecutive school-record setting seasons in wins.

Norwood led Sterling to NAIA regional play for only the second and third times in school history after the 2003 and 2004 seasons and posted a win over Kansas State of the Big 12 during his first year at the small, Presbyterian school.

Prior to being named head coach at Sterling, Norwood served as head coach at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania from 1998-1999, which was his first head coaching job. Previously, Norwood had been an assistant coach under legendary coach Gary Vaught at the University of Indianapolis. Both Mercyhurst and Indianapolis are NCAA Division II schools.

While serving as the head assistant coach at Indianapolis from 1994-98, Norwood was a part of a program that averaged 39 wins a season and reached the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1998. Indianapolis was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in Division II during his time there.

Because Norwood's teams have succeeded, many players have received post-season recognition. In his first two years at Sterling, 28 players earned some sort of post-season conference or national accolades including three honorable mention All-America selections and an All-American. Norwood has also coached two players at Sterling that have played in the professional ranks.

Norwood takes over the Ouachita program from former head coach B.J. Brown who resigned following the 2004 season after heading the program for five seasons.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to coach at Ouachita," Norwood said. "From what I've seen already, the campus and the school are easy to recruit to and I look forward to getting started. We're ready to make Ouachita Baptist a contender in the Gulf South Conference."

Sharp echoed Norwood's sentiments and said he looks forward to having him on staff at Ouachita.

"We're just as excited to have Coach Norwood coming to join us," Sharp said. "He's been at a school that is comparable to Ouachita in Sterling and he's been a part of a very successful Division II program in Indianapolis. We feel like the combination of these will mean a bright future for Ouachita baseball. We wanted someone who would lend instant credibility to our program within baseball circles and we believe that's what we have in Scott Norwood."

Norwood graduated from Oral Roberts University in his hometown of Tulsa in 1988 with a degree in business administration. Norwood received his Master of Arts degree in 1998 from Indianapolis. Norwood played baseball at Connors State Junior College in Oklahoma and also at ORU. In addition to his duties as head baseball coach, Norwood served as assistant athletic director in charge of Game Day Management and Facilities at Sterling.

Norwood is married to the former Anne Harper of Tulsa. The couple will move to Arkadelphia in the coming weeks.
