Gardner-Webb defeats Lipscomb 72-55
Tuesday, Jan 4, 2005
By Marc Rabb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BP)--Tim Jennings scored 19 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, had six assists and six steals to lead Gardner-Webb to a 72-55 win over Lipscomb to improve to 3-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play Jan. 3.

Gardner-Webb (6-4, 3-0 A-Sun) won its sixth-straight game at Paul Porter Arena in the process, with Jennings and company supplying plenty of defense against the Bisons (6-3, 1-1 A-Sun). Jennings harassed Lipscomb's leading scorer, guard Brian Fisk, into 4-of-17 shooting on the night -- with the Bisons' guard not reaching double figures until 8.6 seconds were left in the game.

Fisk finished with 11 points for Lipscomb, as the visitors managed only 36.7 percent shooting for the game -- and made only 1-of-15 three-point buckets against the Bulldogs.

Brian Bender added 15 points and five boards for Gardner-Webb, and 6-foot-9 center Simon Conn continued to play well with 14 points and 10 rebounds inside. Lipscomb was led by center Shaun Durant's 17 points and 10 boards.

After falling behind 4-0 early, Gardner-Webb went on a 19-5 run to take its first double figures lead of the game, 19-9, with 11:41 to play on a pair of free throws by Bender. The lead would grow to 13 points with 1:54 to play in the half on a three-point bucket by Bender, but a follow shot by Durant as time expired trimmed the lead to 40-31 at the break.

Both Durant and Bender netted 10 points in the opening half to lead their teams offensively.

Lipscomb cut the lead to seven points twice in the second half's first four minutes, but Gardner-Webb steadily built its lead back to double figures, taking a 55-40 lead with 13:05 to play on a jumper by Chris Gash. Leading 59-48 with 9:07 to play, Gardner-Webb put the game away, going on a 13-2 run to lead 72-50 with 4:11 left.

Lipscomb would not be able to answer, losing their second straight game on the road.

Gardner-Webb shot 42.9 percent from the floor and made 10-of-27 from long distance Monday night. The 'Dogs also held a 41-36 edge on the glass, with Jennings and Conn leading the way.
