Gardner-Webb holds off Campbell
Monday, Jan 10, 2005
By Marc Rabb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BP)--Brian Bender scored 22 points and Gardner-Webb overcame a cold shooting night to hold off Campbell, 69-66, for its eighth-straight home win and its fifth in a row in Atlantic Sun Conference play Jan. 7.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-4, 5-0 A-Sun) managed to shoot only 38.5 percent (25-for-65) in the game and missed several key free throws in the final two minutes but still found a way to hold off the visitors from Buies Creek.

With his team leading 66-64 with just over three minutes left, Bender dribbled into the lane to bury a soft 16-foot jumper to push the Bulldogs' lead to 68-64 at the 3:13 mark. GWU missed four shots and three free throws over the next two minutes, however, until Simon Conn sank a free throw to make the score 69-64 with 1:18 to play.

Campbell answered by pulling to within three points, 69-66, on a Maurice Latham three-pointer with 1:09 to play. Gardner-Webb ran the shot clock down on its next possession, missed a shot and then regained possession after a tie-up on the rebound. The Camels were forced to foul, but Tim Jennings missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 20 seconds left to give the visitors life.

After a Gardner-Webb foul with 10 seconds left caused Campbell to reset its offense out of bounds, Camel guard Ruell Pringle missed a twisting three-pointer with four seconds left -- and the Bulldogs came away with the rebound to end the game.

Jennings (13 points) and Conn (12 points) also scored in double digits for Gardner-Webb, and both Andre Manning and Josh Chiles came off the bench to contribute seven each. Point guard T.J. McCullough dished off a career-high 10 assists to only one turnover in the game, keying a 17-6 second half run for GWU that left the 'Dogs in front by nine points, 61-52, with 10:03 to play.

Pringle led the Camels (2-10, 0-5 A-Sun) with 20 points, as his squad lost its third-straight game by five points or less in league play. Campbell shot 46.6 percent for the game and out-rebounded GWU 42-34 on the night. Comerlee Poole (12 points) and Dominique Klein (12 points) also helped pace a feisty Campbell offensive effort. Latham returned from a one-game suspension to provide eight points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

The game marked the third-straight time that Campbell has held its opponent under 40 percent from the floor.
