BUIES CREEK, N.C. (BP)--Chris Gash scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Gardner-Webb to a 64-62 comeback win over Campbell Feb. 8 in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action at Carter Gym.

The league-leading Bulldogs (13-9, 10-5) rallied from a 15-point deficit with 17:29 to go and handed Campbell (2-20, 0-15) its 17th-straight loss.

The Camels were unable to rebound from a 14-0 Gardner-Webb flurry and the Bulldogs claimed their second close victory over the Camels this year after a 69-66 triumph Jan. 7 at Boiling Springs.

Gash had to leave the game early in the first half when he suffered a cut under his chin, but the sophomore finished with 12 points and eight boards in the final period. Simon Conn added 12 points and Tim Jennings 10, plus six assists for Gardner-Webb, which won its second-straight.

Freshman guard Jake Wohlfeil led Campbell with season-highs of 22 points (4-of-8 threes, 8-of-8 free throws) and seven rebounds, while adding three steals and no turnovers in 38 minutes. Ruell Pringle chipped in 16 and Diego Aguiar had 11.

Campbell led 36-27 at the half and extended the margin to 15 when Colin Hunt's jumper with 17:29 to go put the Camels ahead 43-28. Aguiar's bucket with 12:59 left pushed the Camel edge to 49-39, but Campbell went the next 10:51 without a field goal.

GWU's decisive run started on Gash's three -- the first of his seven points within the span -- that trimmed the score to 55-50 with 8:44 to go. Conn's two foul shots with 6:25 remaining in the contest gave Gardner-Webb its first lead since the 15:20 mark of the opening period. Andre Manning's foul shot with 3:11 left pushed the score to 61-55.

A Wohlfeil three, following by an offensive foul by Manning, then Pringle's drive brought the Camels within 61-60 with 1:38 to go. Jennings answered with a lay-up before Wohlfeil's pull-up jump shot from right of the lane again closed the Camels within one at 63-62 with 49 seconds to play.

Conn then missed a three from the right corner with less than 30 seconds to go, Wohlfeil rebounded, and the Camels held for one shot.

Maurice Latham worked on the left block and was fouled by Gash with 5.4 seconds left. Latham, who entered the game shooting 70 percent from the stripe, missed both ends of the two shot foul opportunity. Brian Bender then sealed the game by making 1-of-2 from the line with 2.1 seconds left.

During Campbell's drought from the field, the Camels went 0-for-11 from the floor and committed five turnovers. The Camels made just 6-of-22 from the field (.273) in the second half and only 18-of-53 (.340) on the night.

Wohlfeil, a 6-4 guard from San Diego, Calif., surpassed his previous season-high of 14 by halftime with 15 points. He made 3-of-4 threes and 6-of-6 foul shots in the opening period.

Campbell built a 20-8 lead with 11:50 left in the first period on the strength of a 16-1 run. Wolhfeil canned three treys and Pringle one from long distance during the spurt. The Camels converted 11 Gardner-Webb turnovers into 17 points in the opening half.

Gardner-Webb, which shot an even 50 percent (12-24) from the field in the second period, finished the game converting 24-52 from the floor (.462). Campbell made 21-26 from the line (.808), while GWU hit 12-19 from the stripe (.632). Each team grabbed 34 rebounds.
