Central Florida stuns Gardner-Webb, ties for 1st
Friday, Feb 25, 2005
By Marc Rabb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BP)--Tim Jennings' three-point shot with 8.2 seconds left was off the mark and Gardner-Webb could not come up with the loose ball as time expired, lifting the University of Central Florida to a surprising 58-55 win and forcing a tie for first place between the two teams Feb. 24.

Gardner-Webb (15-11, 12-7 A-Sun) fell behind early due to poor shooting, trailing 31-23 at the break to the league's top defensive team. The loss was the second-straight for Gardner-Webb with the prospect of clinching the Atlantic Sun championship on the line.

The shooting didn't get much better for the Bulldogs in the second half, but a 6-0 run out of the locker room cut the lead quickly to 31-29 with 16:53 to play in the game on a pair of Simon Conn free throws. Gardner-Webb would finally pull even, 38-38, with 11:34 to play on two free throws by Chris Gash. The Bulldogs took a 40-38 lead on Conn's lay-up with 10:59 left.

UCF's Gary Johnson quieted the Porter Arena crowd briefly with a long three-pointer to give the Golden Knights (20-8, 12-7 A-Sun) a 41-40 lead moments later, but the Bulldogs barreled back out front 44-41 on four-straight free throws from Conn and T.J. McCullough.

The two teams traded buckets and free throws the rest of the way, as neither squad posted more than a three-point lead. The score was tied five times in the final seven minutes of action.

Gardner-Webb's final lead came after a Tim Jennings free throw with 3:40 to play, giving the 'Dogs a 55-54 edge. But Anthony Williams nailed a baseline jumper with 3:11 left to push UCF back into the lead for good, 56-55.

Neither team scored again until Justin Rose shook free for a lay-up with 30 seconds left, setting up Gardner-Webb's final possession. Williams blocked a McCullough jumper out of bounds with 16 seconds left and Jennings' contested long ball from the right wing was just off the mark.

Conn led all scorers with 18 points, with Jennings (12 points) and McCullough (11 points) also touching double figures. But Gardner-Webb shot only 34.7 percent for the game and saw UCF gain a 29-27 edge on the glass. The 'Dogs were a frigid 3-for-18 from three-point range on the night as well.

UCF got 15 points off the bench from Rose, helping the Golden Knights outscore GWU 15-0 in bench points. Peppers (14 points), Johnson (12 points) and Williams (10 points) also scored in double figures for UCF. The Golden Knights shot 47.7 percent for the game (21-of-44) and had eight of their 16 rebounds in the second half come on the offensive end -- not resulting in many points, but extending several key possessions and running valuable time off the clock.
