Gardner-Webb baseball falls to Furman
Friday, Mar 11, 2005
By Marc Rabb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BP)--Furman avenged an earlier loss to Gardner-Webb by rapping out 18 hits in an 11-4 win over the Diamond 'Dogs March 9 at Varsity Field.

The Paladins (6-6) scored two runs each in the first and second innings and overcame a wild start by pitcher Case Cassedy to pull away.

After his teammates staked him to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with four hits off of Gardner-Webb starter Brandon Martin, Cassedy threw six consecutive balls, walked three batters and saw Gardner-Webb (6-7) score its first run on an RBI base on balls by Billy McCarson to trim the lead to 2-1.

A pair of unearned runs in the top of the second pushed the lead to 4-1 for the Paladins, and a three-run third put the game out of reach. Joe Daysh belted a solo home run in the top of the fifth for an 8-1 edge before Gardner-Webb responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to trim the lead to 8-4. Blake Lalli's two-run single was the big blow for Gardner-Webb in that frame, but Furman would not allow the Bulldogs to draw closer.

Furman added three runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.

Cassedy (1-0) scattered three hits and fanned two for the win, and also went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI single. Andrew Greene went 4-for-6 with three RBI to pace the Paladins' 18-hit attack, while A.J. Davidiuk (3-for-5, RBI), Matthew Betsill (2-for-5, 2B, two RBI), Mike Rumpke (2-for-5, run), Daysh (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and Joey Rodgers (2-for-4, three runs) also had multiple-hit afternoons.

Martin (0-2) was tagged with the loss for Gardner-Webb, allowing seven hits in 2.0 innings of work on a staff day for the Bulldogs. Seven other pitchers threw for Gardner-Webb, with Zach Farry, Matt Taffazoli and Webster Beal each throwing scoreless innings in relief.

Gardner-Webb managed eight hits off of three Furman pitchers, with Lalli (2-for-4, two RBI) the lone man with more than one hit.
