By Marc Rabb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP)--UNC Asheville snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning and held on for a 5-4 win over Gardner-Webb March 22 at Greenwood Field.

After UNC Asheville (6-13) staked itself to a 2-0 lead early in the game, Gardner-Webb (7-13) answered with a fierce effort with two outs in the fourth inning. Jeremy McCann plated a pair with a clutch two-run triple, and Matt Higginson gave Gardner-Webb its only lead of the game, 3-2, with an RBI hit to plate McCann.

UNC Asheville wasted little time knotting the game, as Alan DeRatt singled in Elliott Arrington in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game off Gardner-Webb starter Blake Lalli.

A two-run single off Gardner-Webb reliever Matt Taffazoli in the fifth gave UNC Asheville its 5-3 lead and the Bulldogs could not catch up down the stretch.

Gardner-Webb did draw closer, however, in the seventh. Matt Bridges stood on first with one out after a fielding error and Billy McCarson delivered a pinch hit single to give the 'Dogs life and bring the go ahead run to the plate.

J.D. Milford delivered an RBI single to score Bridges, but UNC Asheville reliever Tim Johnson got out of the jam with a double play groundout with his team still in front by a run.

Gardner-Webb saw Bridges reach base again in the ninth inning after being hit by a pitch, but the 'Dogs could not get him home and fell for the second straight game. Gardner-Webb has lost five one-run games this season through 20 games.

Six different Bulldogs collected hits in the game as Gardner-Webb managed only six hits off UNC Asheville's pitching. Taffazoli (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two earned runs out of the bullpen. Brandon Martin pitched a hitless inning in relief to keep Gardner-Webb within striking distance in the eighth.

Josh Coyle went 2-for-4 for UNC Asheville as he had a double and triple. Dawson also went 2-for-4 for the hosts.
