Gardner-Webb falls to High Point as win streak snaps
Thursday, Apr 21, 2005
By Marc Rabb

HIGH POINT, N.C. (BP)--Gardner-Webb saw an early 3-0 lead evaporate April 19 as High Point scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-3 win over the Diamond 'Dogs and snap a five-game win streak.

Gardner-Webb played the game Tuesday without five regular offensive starters.

The Bulldogs (16-21) saw their first three batters reach base safely in the top of the first, as Joey Testa singled to get things started. Ryan Sickles smoked a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third, and Jay McConnell belted a double of his own to left for a quick 2-0 lead.

After a strikeout, Matt Higginson came through with a base hit up the middle, driving in McConnell for a 3-0 lead against Panthers starter Ricky Hudson.

Gardner-Webb's Wes Cogdill moved down the Panthers in order in the bottom of the inning, using only eight pitches to get through. After a scoreless top of the second, however, High Point got things going. Josh Cotton led off with a single and scored on a triple to right center by Dustin Holtzman to trim the lead to 2-1. Bobby Brown then drove in Holtzman with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to 3-2, before Cogdill could get out of the frame.

High Point (18-22) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Cogdill issued a pair of walks and saw both runners move into scoring position after a balk. Brown delivered an RBI single through the box to tie the game with one out, chasing Cogdill from the game. Reliever Clay Konas came in to close out the inning, but High Point's Hudson settled in as well, teaming with two relievers to shut the Bulldogs out the rest of the way.

Light hitting third baseman Juan Carcheri proved to be the hero for High Point, leading off the sixth by lofting a 3-2 offering from Konas over the fence in left to put the Panthers on top 4-3.

Gardner-Webb would get runners to second base with less than two outs in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not get those men home to fall for the 10th time this season in a one-run game. The 'Dogs are 1-10 in 2005 when a game is decided by one run.

Konas (2-5) was the hard luck loser for GWU, despite pitching well and allowing only two hits in 4.2 innings of relief. Hudson (1-0) got the win for High Point.

Sickles (2-for-3) and McConnell (2-for-4, 2 RBI) had four of Gardner-Webb's six hits on the day to pace the offense. Six different High Point batters collected a hit for the Panthers.
