GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--In a game that was dominated by defense, the Wingate University football team defeated host Tusculum College 10-7 Sept. 24 at Pioneer Field in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 SAC) lead the series between the two schools 6-4 with back-to-back wins, while the Pioneers (2-2, 0-1) suffer their first homecoming loss in six years.

Neither team scored an offensive touchdown, while the two defenses combined for 14 sacks on the afternoon, including nine by Wingate and five by Tusculum.

Wingate's entire point production came within a span of 47 seconds in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs got on the board first as Jonathan Beford connected on a 22-yard field goal at the 1:42 mark to cap a 13-play, 38-yard drive. On the second play of Tusculum's ensuing possession, Wingate's Allen Smith caused a fumble by rookie quarterback Corey Russell that was picked up by Tee Overman and returned 16-yards for a touchdown. Beford's extra point made the score 10-0 with 55 seconds left in the frame.

Kenwin Cummings and Smith finished with 10 tackles each. The Wingate duo also each forced a fumble and posted three tackles for loss a piece. Smith and Overman also tallied three sacks each on the afternoon.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers got in the red zone three times, but Russell was intercepted in the end zone by Wingate's Cody Moore, while Tusculum kicker Justin Higgins missed a pair of field goals, including a 38-yarder on the final play of the half as the score remained 10-0 heading into the locker room.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Tusculum's Octavius Love got the Pioneers back in the contest as he returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown. Higgins' kick made the score 10-7 with 10:51 left in the game. Love's punt return was the fourth longest in school history.

The Tusculum defense held the Bulldogs at bay, and with 4:03 remaining, the Pioneers got the ball at the Wingate 47. Tusculum got as close to the Wingate 45 and on fourth and eight, Steven Cole, Frank Marino and Smith all combined on a sack of Russell with 2:11 in the contest.

Wingate recorded a pair of first downs in the closing moments as Marcus Davis rushed for 30 of his 51 yards in the Bulldogs' final possession to ice the game.

Tusculum was led offensively by freshman Randy Williams who rushed for 95 yards on 25 carries. Russell went 11-for-16 for 104 yards, as he completed six passes to Jamichael Caldwell for 68 yards.

Wingate's Brandon Boone, who improves to 9-0 as a starter for his career, went 16-for-29 for 164 yards. Nine Wingate players recorded a reception for the Bulldogs, including Gabe Nail, who tallied four catches for 55 yards. Boone was sacked five times on the day, including twice by Tusculum's Adrian Samples. Samples tied a Tusculum single-game record with his five tackles for loss.

Love also posted two Tusculum single-game records including his seven punt returns for 132 yards.

The Pioneers were led defensively by Kenny Wells, Tim Chester and Rodney Peebles, who each tallied seven tackles each. Chester also recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.
