ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP)--Oliver Holmes scored 28 points, while Omar Collington added 24 points as UNC Asheville won its opening exhibition game of the year by defeating Mars Hill, 87-73 before a packed crowd of 1,028 at Justice Center Nov. 3.

The Bulldogs led from start to finish but had to hold off several furious Lion rallies in the second half to get the victory. Mars Hill was led by senior guard Walt Baxley who scored a game-high 35 points. Baxley was 9-of-14 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

“It wasn’t pretty but it was a win against a well-coached Mars Hill team,” Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach said. “We did a lot of good things in the first half and were able to hold them off when they made a run at us in the second half. We were very sloppy though. We made 38 turnovers and really handled the ball poorly at times. But we found a way to win and that’s always good to see when you’re starting the season out.”

The Bulldogs led from start to finish and jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first half at 43-23 before settling for a 49-33 halftime lead. Asheville used a huge disparity at the free throw line as the Bulldogs were 22-fo-24 from the line in the opening half, while the Lions were 4-of-11. Baxley kept Mars Hill in the game with 19 points in the opening half.

In the second half, the Lions crept to within 69-60 on a Baxley dunk with 7:48 left. But the Bulldogs took charge of the game at that point as they went on a 12-2 run to build an 81-62 lead. Collington went 6-of-6 from the free throw line The senior guard finished 14-of-17 from the charity stripe.

Once again Mars Hill roared back as the Lions scored the next nine points to close to within 81-71 on a made free throw from Andy Miller at the 1:55 mark.

But Collington hit two free throws to get the lead back to 83-71 and the Lions could get no closer.

The Bulldogs dominated the backboards 49-26 as four different players grabbed at least five rebounds. Chad Mohn led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds. UNCA did a great job from the free throw line as it finished the game, going 37-of-46 for 80 percent.

Also scoring in double figures for Asheville was Brett Warner with 13 points. Marques Maxwell finished with 10 points for Mars Hill.
