Monday, Nov 7, 2005
By Dom Donnelly

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Freshman quarterback Corey Russell passed for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tusculum College football team to a 43-28 win over visiting Mars Hill College Nov. 5 at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers end a six-game losing streak to finish the season at 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the league. Mars Hill falls to 4-6, 3-4 in SAC.

The two teams combined for 71 points and 887 yards offensively. Tusculum edged Mars Hill in total offensive yardage 444-443, but it was two critical turnovers by the Lions, including a fumble on the goal in the second quarter that halted a Mars Hill drive.

Russell also rushed for 50 yards while the Tusculum rookie duo of Randy Williams and Phillip McGee each rushed for two touchdowns in the win.

Mars Hill quarterback Brandon Sims passed for 328 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 20 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Senior Antione Jones led the Lions in rushing with his 93 yards, giving him 1,091 yards on the season.

Tusculum's Gilbert Martinez had a career day as he hauled in nine receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown. Jamichael Caldwell also had three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown reception.

Mars Hill had two receivers with more than 100 yards. Tyrea Allen made five catches for 158 yards and a touchdown, while Demario Zachery had five grabs and 121 yards and two scores.

The defenses had plenty of chances to make tackles as the two teams combined for 142 offensive plays. Mars Hill had four players with more than 10 tackles each while Tusculum's Eric McIntyre posted a career-high 10 stops in the victory.

The Pioneers drove down the field on the opening possession of the game as McGee capped off a seven-play, 84-yard drive with his two-yard plunge. Glen Black's extra point made it 7-0. Mars Hill tied the score later in the period as Zachery hauled in a 42-yard strike from Sims at the 7:19 mark. Craig Williams' kick evened the contest at 7-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Caldwell caught the ball at the Tusculum five and went 90 yards to the Mars Hill 5, the fourth longest return in Tusculum history. On the next play, Williams dived in from two yards away to send Tusculum ahead 14-7.

Tusculum added to its lead early in the second quarter when Russell found Martinez on a 26-yard pass to move up 21-7.

The Lions took its next possession and drove methodically down the field utilizing Sims' arm and the running of Jones. Mars Hill got to the shadow of the Tusculum end zone, but Sims was hit by Jeremy Thompson at the Tusculum 1 and fumbled. Antrez McDaniel recovered the fumble for Tusculum in the end zone to stop the Mars Hill threat.

Neither team could mount an offensive attack until just before halftime as Mars Hill got the ball after a punt at its own 47 with 1:04 remaining till intermission. Sims converted a critical third down with an 18-yard completion to Allen and followed that with a 19-yard strike to Jarrett Simmons to the Tusculum 11. On fourth down and 16 with 15 seconds left, Sims scrambled and found Zachery in the left corner of the end zone with 8.1 seconds remaining and trailed 21-14 heading into halftime.

The offensive fireworks were unleashed in the second half as the two teams scored on the first four possessions of the period. The Lions built on the momentum they carried into the locker room and drove 80 yards in eight plays to tie the game at 21-21 on Sims' one-yard run across the goal line at the 11:39 mark of the third quarter.

It was Tusculum's turn as the Pioneers went 62 yards on their next possession with McGee giving Tusculum the lead again at 28-21 following his four-yard carry at the 9:46 mark.

Mars Hill answered with another 80-yard march, including Sims' 66-yard completion to Allen to even the score at 28-28 two minutes later.

Tusculum broke the deadlock for good on its next possession as Tusculum converted on third down twice and Russell completed an eight-yard bullet pass to Caldwell in the back of the end zone as Tusculum led 35-28 with 4:37 left in the frame.

Tusculum found pay-dirt again when Williams scored his second touchdown of the day on a three-yard dash with 12:46 left in the contest. Black's extra point kick hit the left upright as Tusculum led 41-28.

Mars Hill mounted another drive into Tusculum territory, but Sims' pass was deflected into the air by Kenny Wells and hauled in by senior Josh Hubbard at the Tusculum 22.

Tusculum would add a safety later in the game to round out the scoring.

Tusculum's Rodney Peebles finished with eight tackles, including two for loss and a sack, while Hubbard tallied seven stops, two behind the line of scrimmage, and forced a fumble to go along with his interception.

Mars Hill's Rontate Martin led all players with 13 tackles, while Ryan Douglas and Jeremy Stewart accounted for a dozen hits each. Chris Dowdell also had 11 tackles, including four for loss and a sack.
