BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (BP)--Simon Conn scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the first half as Gardner-Webb took control early and held off a late surge to beat Jacksonville, 77-73, Jan. 28 for the Bulldogs’ fourth win in a row.

The win pulled Gardner-Webb to within two games of first place in the A-Sun standings.

Conn finished the game with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks, hitting 8-of-10 shots to pace five starters in double figures and post his second double-double in a row. Chris Gash led the ‘Dogs with 19 points, Brian Bender added 12 and both Tim Jennings and T.J. McCullough added 10 points. McCullough also dished off eight assists and committed just one turnover on the night in a great all-around floor game.

Saturday marked another torrid shooting night for Gardner-Webb (10-9, 7-5 A-Sun), as the ‘Dogs shot 55.6 percent from the floor (30-of-54) and scored 46 of their 77 points in the paint -- leading by double figures for nearly the entire night after an early first half run.

GWU dominated for much of the game, but Jacksonville (1-18, 1-11 A-Sun) finally got the lead under nine points with 36 seconds left, hitting some shots late to pull the margin deceptively to four by the final buzzer. The ‘Dogs led by as many as 16 points with less than four minutes to play.

Gardner-Webb led 37-26 at halftime, thanks to Conn’s early dominance inside. The 6-foot-9 Australian center connected on 6-of-7 shots in the period as GWU shot 57.7 percent and held Jacksonville to just 34.6 percent defensively. Gash scored 13 of his 19 in the final period, marking the second game in a row that the junior has netted double digits in the final half of a game.

Jacksonville shot a sizzling 66.7 percent in the final half to keep the game from turning into a blowout, as Aubrey Connerly finished with a game-high 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Mario Brown (7-of-7) was perfect from the floor to add 17 points and Antonio Cool added three late buckets to finish in double figures with 13.

Cool struggled with Jennings’ defense for the second time in less than 10 days, missing seven of his first 10 shots. Marcus Allen, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds in GWU’s win at Jacksonville on January 19, scored just one point and turned the ball over six times on Saturday.

Gardner-Webb hit just 5-of-17 from long distance and saw Jacksonville connect on 6-of-13 shots from the same location -- with Connerly hitting all four of his three-point attempts.
