JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (BP)--The Carson-Newman baseball team secured at least a second place finish in the South Atlantic Conference regular season standings April 12 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lenoir-Rhyne at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
The Eagles pounded out 10 hits - including six doubles - to take the opener by a 9-2 margin, and then came back with an 11-hit effort in the nightcap to record a 7-2 victory.
"This was big," said Carson-Newman head coach Tom Griffin of the sweep. "Offensively, Lenoir-Rhyne has a good club, so that's why I think our pitching was solid today. Getting ready for the tournament, you want to finish strong down the stretch, and I think today we really did that."
Carson-Newman improved to 13-6 in the SAC with the pair of victories, 35-14 overall. The Eagles came into the weekend one game behind league-leading Catawba in the loss column. Lenoir-Rhyne fell to 10-10 and 21-17, respectively.
