Union's women's basketball team raises $12,000 for hunger relief

By Steven Aldridge

JACKSON, Tenn. (BP)--The Union University women’s basketball team raised more than $12,000 worth of food and donations as part of a food drive to benefit the Children's Hunger Fund.

“In a day and time when athletics is so over-glorified, it is great to be able to use athletics to benefit others,” Coach Mark Campbell said. “It is also a great thing to watch the team work so hard and enjoy a project like this.”

Union’s Christina Ray, who will be a senior on the 2009-10 team, led the group of players in this project.

“Christina was on task for the entire month and did an unbelievable job with this project,” Campbell said. “I am very proud of her.”

The players gathered 120 boxes of food, and more than $9,000 in donations. All of the food and money gathered will benefit children in Mexico and southern California.

The Children’s Hunger Fund is North America’s top cost efficient charity, as rated by Forbes magazine.

After a successful first year, the players look forward to doing this project again and hope to get more people involved next year.
