MIAMI (BP)--Former Carson-Newman standout and Florida Marlins pitching prospect Steve Cishek was called up to the Marlins prior to their Sept. 20 game.
Cishek, of Falmouth, Mass., was drafted by the Marlins out of Carson-Newman in the fifth round of the 2007 draft. He appeared in 26 games in advanced Class-A this season with the Jupiter Hammerheads, posting a 2.83 ERA with four saves.
After being promoted to Double-A Jacksonville, Cishek went 3-1 with a 4.31 ERA.
He becomes the first Eagle since Clyde Wright to reach the major leagues. Wright pitched for Carson-Newman in the 1960s, and would go on to win 100 games with three major-league teams. He was an All-Star in California in 1970, and threw a no-hitter against Oakland that year.
