OBU wins NAIA men's swimming championship Thursday, Mar 8, 2012 By Staff |
OKLAHOMA CITY (BP)—The Oklahoma Baptist University men’s swimming and diving team captured an NAIA national championship in its first season of competition in a March 3 meet at Oklahoma City Community College.Down a point to powerhouse Fresno Pacific with one event left, OBU’s Ivan Maciuniak, Nick Schuttinger, Mateo Maciuniak and Daniel Ramirez turned in an NAIA record 2:57.83 in the 400 free relay to take the title. "You gotta believe in miracles," OBU coach Sam Freas said. "God is good. I dreamt it. It happened. It's all about the kids. It's all about heart. Today they learned to swim with their hearts and not their heads." OBU finished with four NAIA records and a national title for the men, and two event championships and a national runner-up finish for the women. In the men’s competition, the Bison edged Fresno Pacific 757-752. Fresno Pacific won the women’s title with 780 points to OBU’s 578. --30--
