DALLAS (BP)—Six Dallas Baptist University baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft June 4-6.
Senior Joel Hutter was the first DBU player chosen, going to the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round. He was later joined by Stuart Pudenz, to Oakland in the 13th round; Austin Elkins, to Houston in the 19th round; Jake Johansen, to Pittsburgh in the 27th round; Taylor Massey, to Oakland in the 29th round; and Kenny Hatcher, to the Los Angeles Angels in the 36th round.
This year marked the third time DBU has seen six names called in the draft. The DBU record came in 2006, when seven players were selected by Major League teams.
Hutter was one of three Patriots to play in all 60 games this past season, including the four games in the Waco Regional held at Baylor Ballpark. Hutter was also a key piece of the DBU squad that advanced to the NCAA Super Regional held in Santa Clara, California in 2011. Hutter batted .338 this past season and drove in 72, tops on the team and tied for fifth in the nation.
