WINGATE, N.C. (BP)--Wingate University senior running back Kenyatta Stackhouse rushed 17 times for 91 yards and a career-high three touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated West Virginia State College 31-7 in non-conference football action Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

Wingate improves to 1-1 overall, while West Virginia State falls to 0-2 overall. With the win, Wingate completes a 65-point turnaround from last season's 55-14 loss to the Yellow Jackets in Institute, W.Va.

The Bulldogs open South Atlantic Conference play next weekend, traveling to Salisbury to face NCAA #7 Catawba College. Kickoff at Shuford Stadium is 1:30 p.m. West Virginia State makes another long journey next Saturday, traveling to Charleston, S.C. to face NCAA Division I-AA Charleston Southern for a 1:30 p.m. contest.

Stackhouse's first score came after the first of five West Virginia State turnovers. Wingate junior linebacker Kinte Wilson, of Sumter, S.C. intercepted WVSC junior quarterback Paul Phillips at the Yellow Jacket 14, returning the ball five yards to the nine. Three plays later, Stackhouse scored from two yards out. Sophomore place kicker Richard Straup, of Anderson, S.C., booted the extra point, making it 7-0 Wingate with 1:14 to go in the first quarter.

The next Stackhouse score came after a WVSC fumble on a punt. Yellow Jacket sophomore return specialist Travis Taylor fumbled a Straup punt at the Wingate 21-yard line. Bulldog freshman defensive end Darrell Nicholson, of Winston-Salem, N.C., recovered at the Wingate nine-yard line. Stackhouse scored on the next play and Straup drilled the extra point, making it 14-0 Wingate at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter.

Wingate junior quarterback Shannon Dawson, of Clinton, La., had a big day. He completed 10-of-21 passes for 201 yards. Senior wide receiver Lucas Greene, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., caught eight of Dawson's aerials for 150 yards. Senior running back Marcus Burns scored Wingate's other touchdown on a 49-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

West Virginia State's only score came in the third quarter, when Phillips found sophomore tight end Bo Burton for a 24-yard scoring strike. Phillips completed only seven-of-22 passes for 88 yards. He had two interceptions, while junior reserve quarterback Pat Word also threw two interceptions.

In two games, Stackhouse has rushed 29 times for 218 yards and four touchdowns. Greene has 14 receptions. The Bulldogs are 11-2 lifetime against members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including a 3-1 mark against WVSC.
