Christ is ‘everything’ to NBA star Durant

By Bill Sorrell

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP)--Playing for the second-youngest team in the NBA this past season, Kevin Durant became the youngest player in NBA history to win the league's scoring title when he finished the 2009-10 regular season averaging 30.1 points.

For Durant, his confidence comes through his relationship with Christ, and he thanks God daily for his skills.

Christ is “who makes us who we are,” Durant said. “He is the alpha and omega. He is everything.”

Durant finished 0.4 points ahead of LeBron James for the title and led Oklahoma City to 50 wins and into the playoffs against Los Angeles, where the Thunder lost the first-round series.

In April, Durant had three 40-point games. His .900 free throw percentage (756 of 840 during the regular season) was sixth best in the NBA. He averaged 7.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

He accepted Christ as his savior at Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md.

"It was something I thought I needed to do,” he said. “It was cool, just the same now."

Durant was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and college basketball's Player of the Year in 2007 after his freshman season at Texas. But Durant is not all about offense.

"He is one of the team's better defenders,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “He rebounds the ball well. He obviously can score in a lot of different areas. He is a team guy that wants to be coached and wants to get better. We are happy the way he has developed."
